This is the entertainment program on our Changkhui podcast station. A place where we talk freely on things that make us up all days and nights such as movies, TV series, music, books, magazines and novels. Our hosts are Gan and Ood, they spend a lot of time discussing the topics that we think they deserve a program of their own. For those who do not know, "Mai Hlap Mai Non" is a phrase, meaning "sleepless"; HLAP is pronounced as Lup, as in cup.
By being the only band that did not cancel their concert in Bangkok during the flood crisis on November 8, 2011, X Japan had commanded a very strong cult following in Thailand. @XGlay, a long time fan of the band and , also, a listener of Changkhui, told the band history with Rud's contribution from time to time. @XGlay brought along some CD collections to show and play in the episode. Kanjana who became a fan recently also joined to show her support for the band. This was the second part of the recordings.

In order to relieve our own and our listeners stress level, we decided to record an episode with no specific topic. We shared what each had been doing during the flood crisis. Some went up country with no specific destination. We also talked about what movies we had been seeing.
Ood went missing in action and our target guest could not participate, so we decided to touch on a "light" topic, Star Wars, covering episode one, two and three, to finish off what we started in MLMN 75. We tried outdoor recording this time, sorry for the background noise.
We shamefully admitted here, this was our failed attempt to finish an American comics within one episode. We did not even do justice to the DC Comics that we tried to cover in the episode. However, Rud managed to carry the story as long as he could since Ood and I did not really know much about it, except for when these characters were made into movies. Anyway, we certainly would try again for the Marvel comics in the next episode.
Too bad, we could not get another guest to join in this epic episode, but we still had Rud to share the Star Wars stories. A must-see series for every moviegoer. With Rud and Ood talking, we managed to cover only Star Wars (A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.
Instead of talking about movies based on true stories, which we had done in the past, we talked about several Thai stories that should be made into movies. Some were quite controversial, some were too close for comfort or too sensitive to touch but we were taking it from the light sides. Sincerely apologize if you are offended by our remarks for any reason.
A somewhat continuation from the previous episode, eventhough it was recorded two months later. This time we discussed about movies that each felt wasting his or her time. This was a rather personal issue. Everyone has different opinion in what movies he or she did not particularly enjoy. After listening to his lists, we really have to wonder why he is wasting his time on these movies.

A topic proposed for a few months but we never actually had a chance to do it since it needed some preparations. We were talking about movies that, if a friend told you their endings, it would totally spoil the viewing experience. Rud Sooparb and Sutin Tanrattanakorn were talking about movies like the Sixth Sense, if you had seen it. Again, three in an episode would never work, we had to split it into two episodes. This was the second one.

Rud, Pan, Hong and Ood gathered to discuss about this epic trilogy, some said one of the best trilogies to come out of the decade; the Matrix. As usual, Rud was the one who could really contribute to the discussion, the rest tried to find their ways into the story with some vague memories. However, it was still a fun discussion, with lots of stories that had nothing to do with the topic (as usual).
An episode that Rud had been waiting to host for a long time. Rud, a long-time NFL fan shared the story of the game; the play, rules, teams and some interesting statistics. He also brought along some props for the show, such as the real NFL shirts. It was still hard to believe that we would end up talking for an hour and a half.
This was meant to be for a Changkhui episode. However, after careful consideration, we decided to put it on Mai Hlap Mai Non instead, due the content nature. We found a basketball enthusiast twitter.com/neopanich, who was also a Changkhui listener, on Twitter. Since we already had Rud facebook.com/RudSooparb as a source for almost any topic, so we put the two together and tried to make an episode out of it.
Some believe that this is the longest novel ever written, 48 books, spanning across 2 parts with various episodes, Petchprauma by Panomtien (Chatchai Wisetsuvannabhum). We simply did not have time or enough info to talk about this. However, this year, by popular demands, we managed to get Boy and a listener to contribute to this episode. Boat (Twitter.com/WalkingTrail) was a long-time Changkhui listener and volunteered for the episode. Apart from the reading experience of Gan, Boy and Boat, we also would like to thank the following webboards for their information, petprauma.com, petchprauma.com, ppu.pantipmember.com and ThailandOutdoor.com/Gun/gunofpetch/gunofpetch.htm.
As requested by a listener, khun Pipat, to produce an episode before the April Songkran break so he could listen to it before he went to Japan. So Rud and Ood agreed to make an episode about Japan and even had a Japanese alumni to join the conversation. With four in a recording, we could not quite manage our time, and ended up with 4 episodes. We also made a video version of this as well, you could download it from the MLMN page at Changkhui.com. This was the fouth and final episode of the series.

A long-awaited episode for Ood. He had been longing to produce this for more than 2 years. For those, who enjoyed Bon Jovi, Mortley Crue, Poison, Quiet Riot and the likes, should enjoy this episode. Golf also came to play the guitar when an opportunity arose, which was rare but somehow, Ood managed. As usual, Rud provided background information. Another long recording that we decided to break into 2 episodes. This was the second and last episode on the recording.

MaiHlapMaiNon: 59. Top 10 Movies of the Decade, according to MLMN
Seeing a few top 10 lists here and there, Ood was tempted to come up with one of his own. He invited the old-timers back and list their favorite of the past decade. Some were still fresh memories and some were so distant that we forgot that there were released in the past few years.
A chapter on Thai entertainment in the 80s, Nite Spot. We touched on the subject as a tribute to a legendary entertainment company that we all were very familiar with during our teens. Rud managed to get bits and pieces here and there to get a whole picture of the company. The company started from radio, TV to music. This was not exactly a funny episode, we just wanted to make a tribute.
After a long plan and delay, we managed to produce this episode on the very same day that the band had a re-union concert. This was unintended but it did play out well. The Innocent was a legendary Thai band in the 80s and, for many reasons, never went away from our memories. Their songs were still played in various places and the new generation seemed to know their songs but did not know who they were. Rud, as usual, packed with all kind of information, while Golf showed his guitar prowess, Ood sang as a backup and Nok became the lead singer on this episode. Wit (from www.polypink.com) was kind enough to produce this episode for us and it showed how well he knew this stuff. It was a very memorable recording experience in Changkhui this year.
A tribute to the greatest rock band in the world, the Beatles. Ood has been trying to setup this episode for some time, but due to schedule conflict, it is delayed until now. We have Golf at his guitar to play along and Rud as the guru for Beatles information. Of course, Ood is the singer. We also have Ben as a guest. As expected, for such a legendary band, we have to divide into 2 episodes. This is the second and final one.

A tribute to one of the greatest singing artists in our life time, Michael Jackson. Rud Sooparb (http://www.rudsooparb.com) joined us on this to share Michael's story. He brought along some samples of Michael's works. Thank you SONY Music for the courtesy of allowing the use of Michael's songs in the episode.
Same casts of podcasters in this episode as in the previous one. We simply recorded this back-to-back. This time we mentioned about movies, which were based on true stories. Some were very old and well-known, such as the untouchables, some were new and relatively unknown such as Freedom Fighters. Anyway, it's really a matter of friends talking about movies they enjoyed.
A group of 6, that should be a record. Six of us talked about various movies that were supposed to be inspiring. It was supposed to, but some of us had very different inspirations, judging from the selection. Most were quite old, thank god, we had Thanaraj who saw so many movies that he could chimed in some new ones.
With feedback from the Queen episode, Ood was inspired to do another music episode. This time, though, he could not find a musician to help, so we had to settle with song samples. Van Halen, a legendary band of the 80s, had long been one of Ood's idols. We would like to thank Warner Music Group for the courtesy of samples of Van Halen's.
Due to Gan's medical problem, we had record an ad-hoc episode. Since we had asked Wiroon to join us, we might as well use him as test case. Wiroon tended to like horror/thriller movies so we asked what he liked. Most of the movies were old, and might appear repeatitive to some listeners. However, the joy of discussion should make up for it.
The response we received at our webboard on the previous episode must have had a big impact to Ood. He scheduled another recording with a very talented musician, Golf. Queen was a legendary band and Ood had been idolizing them since his teenage years. Instead of just playing some of their songs, Ood went one step further by singing those songs himself. Talking about nerve! This could be an irritating episode for those who wanted to listen to some serious review or comments on the band. We just had had too good time with the record so much so that we had to split into 2 episodes. This was the final episode on Queen.

Out of the blues, Ood requested for a recording. This time, Passakorn proposed a topic since both Gan and Ood felt like recording but had no topic. During school holidays, Passakorn had a hard time, finding movies for children, so he asked if both could come up with movies recommendations for Children. Ood still managed to steer the topics out of the way from time to time.
On the previous three episodes, Ood sneaked out, recording without Gan. This time around, Gan took revenge by recording with Ood and managed to get a listener to help her out. Tum, a long-time listener, talked about some not-so-main-stream TV series that she enjoyed. She must have enjoyed them all right, since she brought along some DVD to show us. There series were Criminal Minds, Foyles War, House MD, Lewis and The Lost Room.
This is the third and last episode of this serie. We talked about a famed composer who composed quite a few Hong Kong TV series. And, the end, we talked about the song that most Thai could sing by heart but would not know what it meant.
We had the honour to host our program with khun Suruch Pattanawongyuenyong, Managing Director of Sahachol Polpuech. Thirty years ago, he was the interpreter for the first chinese TV series on Thai TV, the series was Pao Boon Jin. After moonlighting for a few years as an interpreter, he left the job to set up a joint-venture company between Sahapattanaphibul group and a Japanese group and has been there ever since. On this MLMN series, we had asked him to share some of his experience back then and translate some of the well-known Chinese TV series song for us.
We put a tribute to our beloved writer, Arthur C. Clarke. We also invited our long-time listener, Zybernav to share some stories. As usual, Ood would steer the team off topic to whatever he was thinking of at the time. Pattanapong and Zybernav prepared some useful for the show as well as some pretty good comment from Piyatad.
One of our Changkhui friends hosted his art exhibition during Jan 3 - Feb. 12, 2008. Thanaraj (Bay) was a professional photographer and he would co-host his photos with a well-known sound designer, Koichi Shimatsu, at Queen Sirikit Art Exhibition Center near Panpha bridge, so we invited him over to talk about the exhibition.
Jing, Ood and friends went to Pai in November, therefore, Ood took the opportunity to share the trip experience with photos. You would need to use either iTunes or Quicktime to view the file to enjoy it. Although, the converation, at times, was somewhat personal, but it was funny nonetheless. This was the second and final episode of the trip.

While Sutin and Passakorn drove to Phuket, the topic came to their minds; what kind of songs they played when they drove on their own. So each picked 10 albums and compared notes, it turned out that they had nothing in common, in terms of music selection. It was quite hard to believe that Sutin would pick Iron Maiden when he drove.
MaiHlapMaiNon 37: Thai Songs in the 80s (2) and Lights Out in London
We recorded the 2nd episode of Thai songs in the 80s right after the 1st one, but decided not to launch it, frankly, due to the facts that we were singing even worse than the 1st one. And then we recorded an ad-hoc episode about a guy who were in London during a blackout evening, Ood was entertaining as usual, but the episode was rather short, so we decided to combine both and make a special episode out of the two. Hope you enjoy it.
It must have itched Ood somewhat to come up with this topic. It started with a post on our webboard about wanting to hear Changkhui talk about ghosts. But we had talked about it in the Changkhui program, so Ood took it in his own hand and launched it in Mai Hlap Mai Non. This was more towards the Bhuddhist approach, rather than the scientific approach in Changkhui.
a little-known TV series named Heroes. It started as Pattanapong's posting on our webboard on how interesting the series seemed to be. And then, as usual, Wikanda became the de facto distributor, spreading words of mouths on the series. Sutin also seemed to like it. Since the series only had one season as of 2007 so there was not much to say and spoil our listeners, let's just say that this was one series worth watching.
We invited Pee, the founder of Zad Zad podcast station, and his friend, Aee for this episode. Zad Zad was formed a few months ago and mentioned our Changkhui site as one of their inspiration, we were quite thrilled and honor to hear that so we would like to know more about them and this should be a great opportunity to promote their site, not that we were very popular! At the moment, the site had 2 podcasts; one was Ezy China, anything about China, and Z Toon, anything about cartoons. You may visit them at http://www.zadzad.com
From a topic that Gan posted on our webboard, Ood somehow managed to make an episode out of it. Each took turn telling their funny experience in lives that brought a smile on everyone's face. Some were old, dating back to our college and some were just a few months old.
Aum won 2 tickets from Air Asia, he went searching for a partner for the trip but no one took it so he had to do it alone. After a long deliberation, he decided to go to China, simply because he was too bored of New York, London and Munich (yes, I was being sarcastic here). He went to Xiamen in June and came back with an impressive story of the local hospitality he experienced there. This was the 2nd and final part of the series.

Mai Hlap Mai Non 30: Miscellaneous on Thai TV series
It was obvious from the episode that Ood really had a lot of free time, he watched quite a few Thai drama series. The three commented about the ongoing TV series during the time. Gan was up to date as usual, but it was still Ood, who seemed to know the hottest actresses on TV.
Finally, they came back to host the show again. Gan came back with her update about what she had been up to. Sutin who just came back from Had Yai also updated about the situation in his home town. This episode was recorded at Training InfoMedia, so Kanjana also joined in the session. Gan updated us about the current Korean series and what to come in the next few months.
Pakabutr took us to EMI Music (Thailand) to talk to a BLUR fan, Samkwan Tonsompong. BLUR was a British band that was famous during the 90s, in the same era as Oasis. Therefore, the BLUR-Oasis comparison would come up during the conversation from time to time. I must admit that I never listened to or knew BLUR before this episode. Nonetheless, the songs that Samkwan played during the episode were quite interesting and not that over the edge for my taste. Hope you enjoy it.
Another nostalgic episode. Looking back in the 80s, these were songs that the four grew up with. Reminding that coming of age moment. Rud led the team in explaining some history of the songs, a few were inaccurate, but it was not interrupted due to the flow of the conversation. Hope you all enjoy it as much as we did. It was so enjoyable that we had to break it into 2 episodes.
Quite a big gang this time. Ood and Gan invited three of our fans, Ford Antitrust, Lonely Dragon and Zybernav, to discuss their favourite cartoons. Each brought some samples of his collections to show us. We recommended that you watched this at our site for the Google Video clip. Because this was a very big topic, we recorded this for two episodes. The following cartoons were mentioned in the episode: Hajime no Ippo: THE FIGHTING, Jenki, H2, Touch, Captain Tsubasa, J-Dream, Shoot, Viva Calcio, The Prince of Tennis, Overdrive, Naruto, Blech, VAGABOND, Death Note and Gantz.
Ood is back from his scuba diving trip and appeared in Mai Hlap Mai Non podcast for the first time in video format. He had kept Gan waiting for weeks to do this episode. As usual, Ood borrowed the series from Gan, and really enjoyed it, so much so that he could talk about it. You may see the video episode of this podcast at our site.
An old friend of ours posted a comment about Thai TV Drama on our webboard (http://changkhui.com/smf/index.php?topic=211.0), and he happened to be in Bangkok for the week (he usually lived in Chiangmai), so we invited him over for a discussion. Too bad, Ood was MIA again, due to scuba diving in Burma, but we managed to get Aum to join the discussion. This was the first MLMN episode in video, but, we did not to want to exhaust your internet connection, so we still put the MP3 file in the feed and you can see Google VDO on our site.
The gang from episode 20 continued their conversation this week, but on a different topic. Zybernav and Boy were King's fans, they had read quite a few, while Ood and Gan were towards movies from King's books. There were some notable mentions of some of the more outstanding books from King's, such as the Stand, It and Needful Things.
Ood and Gan invited a fan on the show, Zybernav. He had posted an in-depth coverage on Sci-Fi on our webboard that triggered us to invite him on the show. And as a defensive measure, the two also invited Boy and Job on the show to contribute to the topics. This should make some audience feel like going out to rent some DVDs.
Another nostalgic episode. This time, rather than finding songs for the discussion, we decided to play guitar and sang ourselves. For those who like the Innocent, Free Bird, Kiriboon, GrandEx, McIntosh, etc., this episode was really for you. And for us, it was a cheap night out for in-house karaoke.
Have you ever had some favourites moments in movies, especially those nicely crafted conversation? Bay collected these as a hobby and shared it with us. Gan also pulled down from quotes from the AFI site, http://www.AFI.com to compare notes. Funny enough, some simple sentence like "I am your father" could really remind people which movie that came from.
Gong, who runs a book rental shop, comes back to discuss Japanese cartoons. Chai, also a cartoon fanatic, joined the gang. There were quite a few cartoons from the 80s, 90s and very few from 2000s. A few questions from those who read them during school days and never have a chance to finish, so we all field questions about those cartoons that we have lost tracks over the years.
Aum, one of our fans, joined us for a movie discussion. They all discussed about their favourite thriller movies. This time, we tried to be more up to date, there were movies from the 70s, 80s, 90s and 2000s, otherwise, we would really be a bunch of old timers, talking about old movies. You would get to hear some familiar names, such as The Shining, The Omen, X Files, etc.
We were very honored that khun Gong, the "Fan Pan Thae" champ in 2003 for Gou Leng to join us in our program. So Gan and Ood invited a few others to join the discussion. This was in order to balance the Jin Yong tape, a few episodes back.
Still in the favourite topics, this time it was the movie soundtracks. Naturally, by our age, most were from the 80s, such as Top Gun and Footloose. However, there were some Thai soundtracks mentioned, such Wai-Ra-Reueng and Nguen-Nguen-Nguen, and, towards the end, we also mentioned some Chinese TV series.
Mai Hlap Mai Non 12: Individuals' Favourite Magazines and Newspaper
This is one of the least talked-about topic in print media, individual favourites. Each came up with their favourites and compared notes. It was a light discussion with passion. Some even quoted very old and no-longer-available such as Quiet Storm.
Mai Hlap Mai Non 11: Books that We Enjoyed, part 2
Apparently, the gang became famous, they had fans now; Ben (AKA Ben'Tale) came on board to share her favourite books. So Ben, Gan and Ood shared their opinions about each favourite book. It's worth mentioning that Rid-Meed-Sun was a favourite among a few in the gang. And Ood managed to surprise everyone with his list.
Mai Hlap Mai Non 10: Books that We Enjoyed, part 1
Back to what we enjoy. Gan and Ood brought us back to what most people could find and enjoy. They invited Indies' Girl, again, as well as Thanaraj (from"Study Abroad7") to share their favourite books.
Mai Hlap Mai Non 9: 100 Recommended Books for Thai
Time to come back home and talk about our own art heritage. This time, Gan and Ood pulled Boy (again) and Passakorn (the producer) to discuss about an old list, compiled by a government-sponsored team to come up with 100 recommended books for Thai. This list is provided on this link, http://www.cupress.chula.ac.th/bestbook.htm. We felt very incompetent since we all combined to having read about 20 books in total, a few were totally unheard of. But it's a constructive discussion that we all thoroughly enjoyed.
Mai Hlap Mai Non 8: Discussion about Korea TV Series
Gan, Ood and Nok (Indies' Kitchen) discussed what they thought about the overall Korea TV series. This was a very funny discussion covering a few well-known series such as Lovers in Paris, Autumn in My Heart, etc. Gan also talked about how she started her translation for these series.
Gan temporarily went solo this time to show her passion for the Korea TV series. She briefly gave a story about when and what series were introduced into Thai national television, compared the series to Thai's and finished the episode with a discussion with a Thai TV series producer, and tried to explain why the Thai series had not been as successful.
Mai Hlap Mai Non 6: Actual Timeline on Chinese Novels, part 2
Boy picked up where he left off last time. Ood obliged by steering away from the topic again, and Gan had to muscled her way back to the topic. For reference and with all due respect, most of the information was from the book "Sa-Kut-Joot-Yut-Tha-Jak-Mung-Motn-Yok" and some of the info were from Boy's own research.
Mai Hlap Mai Non 5: Actual Timeline on Chinese Novels, part 1
Gan, Ood and Boy performed a respectable job of sorting Chinese martial arts novels in chronological order. More often than not, Ood would steer the conversation away into some other topics, and it was up to Gan to pull him back onto the topic. Once again, Boy was the most knowledgeable one who did a lot of hard work. It's an entertaining episode with a few laughs. And, as usual, they ran out of time so we had to continue it to the week after.
Mai Hlap Mai Non 4: Chinese Martial Arts Novels, Part 2
Gan and Ood did not stop at pulling Boy (from Changkhui), they managed to get Wor (Changkhui) and Chai (Engineer and Architect) to discuss their nostalgic syndrome. This time, it was more about the classic 80s Hong Kong TV series. Ood even sang the famous "the Bund" song.
Mai Hlap Mai Non 3: Chinese Martial Arts Novels, Part 1
Gan and Ood invited Boy to share his expertise in Chinese martial arts novels. They talked mostly about novels written by the two classic writers, Gu Leng and Jin Yong. Also, they often referred to the classic 80s Hong Kong TV series.
Gan and Ood introduced the not-so-new TV series "24", from the USA TV networks. There are 24 episodes in a season, every episode happens in the same day, each represents an hour in the day consecutively, thus, 24. This is one series that really keeps us up all night to finish the DVD. Official Web site: http://www.fox.com/24
